The civil division of Hinds County Court is the busiest civil court in the state of Mississippi with approximately 6,000 new filings each calendar year. The filings encompass legal disputes involving matters of law and equity, as well as appeals from Hinds County Justice Court and the various municipal courts in the county. Some matters are heard by the Court with the judge making a ruling, while other cases are heard by a jury over which the judge presides.
Recognized by peers as having:
- decades of civil and felony criminal jury trial experience;
- an appellate record with cases making or clarifying the law; and,
- success in private practice and in both suing and representing local government;
Pieter took the bench and began immediately hearing cases and resolving disputes. The Court’s case closure rate ensures justice delayed is the exception rather than the regular. With the Court operating efficiently, Pieter is focused on community based issues to improve Jackson and Hinds County, including:
- Respecting every person who comes before the Court.
- Promoting housing stability.
- Addressing nuisance and hazardous properties.
- Debt collection fairness and relief.
- Taking illegal guns off the streets (over 60 since March 2024).
- Encouraging voter registration, voting and JURY SERVICE!
For over 30 years I have practiced law to make a difference in the community. Whether in private practice with Isaac Byrd or Anthony Simon, or in public service to the City of Jackson under Mayor Johnson, Mayor Melton and Mayor Lumumba, Sr and to the Hinds County Board of Supervisors, I have always sought to give advice that helps promote the greater good. Along the way I have helped schoolteachers keep their licenses, nurses whose cars were damaged by city streets and people who were wrongfully accused.
As YOUR Hinds County judge I am passionate about ensuring justice for all regardless of economic status, race, religion or personal beliefs. As YOUR Hinds County Court judge, I pledge FAIRNESS to each person and each case.
